Adele Kruse, General Manager and son Paulo

The owner and builder, Fritz J Kruse II, built the hotel on a piece of land left by his German grandfather, FJ Kruse I. FJ I pursued a maritime career and eventually landed in Samoa, married Luse Purcell, a local girl, and from their union had a son Johann who begot their grandson FJ Kruse II. The name Insel Fehmarn Hotel holds sentimental significance to the owner of this family's remarkable journey. The General Manager, Adele Kruse, is one of the 11 children of Fritz J Kruse II and Peleiupu Mika of American Samoa.

Quoting Adele: "Come, stay with us. We are more than just a curious name."

Traveller Comments:
"Rooms were basic but had plenty of room for 2 Adults and 2 younger children and were all that we required. Bathrooms could be a lot cleaner as both rooms we stayed in on our two visits had a stale urine smell in and around the toilet.
Hotel staff were friendly and helpful and coped well given the influx of guests due to the tsunami during our stay. Breakfasts were good and accommodated an early breakfast on the day of our early morning flight departure.
We would stay here again"
Mrs. Julie W. - Australia on 04/11/2009
"Room was clean and basic. Not much information in the room as to the services available or where the ammenities were. No after hours services available."
Mr. Raymond P. - New Zealand on 27/08/2009
"We stayed 8 days and our towels were changed each day but the sheets on the beds were never changed. Breakfast & meals in the restaurant were good but the room service meals were cold and not up to the same standard. Often bar not open when it was advertised it would be. Minimal cleaning products used in rooms and bathroom had stale smell. Very friendly, helpful front desk lady."
Mrs. Karen T. - New Zealand on 18/07/2009
"We found Insel to be a very basic hotel. Remember to take a copy of your reservation as they did not have ours. Rooms were clean and staff very polite and helpful. Breakfast is the same thing everyday so gets a bit boring even though it is complimentary. They should include free juice. Not much going on for entertainment. I think I would choose another hotel next time we come just so we can relax more outside of our rooms. Just a warning if you want to use the iron. The iron was sooo dirty I had to use a cloth over the top. Also, the colour from the ironing board (pinky/red) left a large stain on my pants. Take your OWN!"
Mr. Raynor S. - Australia on 20/03/2009
"When checking in we had been downgraded from the execitive room we had booked to the superior room given. No explanation was given even tho we had asked everyday we were there (3 days). One of the room smelt and the other room had light bulbs not working, the amenitits were not replenished daily.Upon checking out we were still being charged the execitive room rate. It took over an hour to get someone down from the accounts to try to work out the account but still no explaination as to why we were downgraded. After making a complaint to Nynette at the Tourist Centre were we able to get some satifaction. This was the frist impression of Samoa and not a good start. It did get much better after we moved to Seabreeze Resort and we had a very memorable stay."
Mrs. Terry F. - Australia on 06/03/2009
"staff helpful except that on arrival we had a roll out bed booked, but on arival at 12;30 am there was not one in the room, and the night porter did not arrange for one, but said he would do it tomorrow- that was not any use to 3 men with 2 double beds!!!"
Mr. Tony H. - New Zealand on 24/09/2008
"Customer Service was outstanding. Well done to Hotel Insel.
Rooms are getting a little tired and air conditioning units need upgrading."
Mrs. Linda I. - New Zealand on 06/09/2008
"Although the staff here were really lovely, the room was not at all value for money. We felt like we were staying in a dingy dungeon and we couldn't wait to leave."
Ms. Alexandra M. - Australia on 25/04/2008
"I stayed at the Insel Fehman hotel in Apia, which is close to downtown andhas some shops and restaurants in walking distance. Staff were absolutely wonderful and provided a shuttle bus, free of charge to main town areas. Breakfast and other meals were just excellent. I recommend this place without Reservations."
Ms. Maria Consuelo B. on 25/11/2007
"Hotel Insel was a good experience. It is in a great tropical garden setting overlooking Apia, in a good part of town with a store and gas close by. It was fairly quiet compared to another Apia hotel I stayed at. My only dissatisfaction came after I checked out and went to another island and then returned to book a couple of more days there. They were going to charge me the RACK rate even though I had been there before and received a lower price. I went elsewhere."
Mr. Steve R. - United States on 13/06/2007
"On arrival at the airport there was no transfer to pick us up as the Hotel had not been contacted by the hotel association. The complimentary breakfast had to be sorted out as the hotel was not told by the association again. Overall the staff were wonderful, the building could do with a bit of work and some signage wouldnt go amiss, and maybe some menus out on display etc. Overall the Hotel was clean but they seem to skimp on necesseties, we had to ask for toilet paper and tea towels....."
Mr. Sam M. - New Zealand on 01/06/2007
"Need more improvement on room services such as clean towels, cleaning of room and topping up of tea and coffee satches and toilet paper. Need improvement of coffee at breakfast as coffee is always watery and luke warm."
Mrs. Luana S. - Australia on 09/01/2007
"Although the booking was made and confirmed via the internet, we were not written in the arrival information book of the hotel which was disconsertning. The staff on duty did not check the room allocated to us which was found to be dirty and very smelly. I was rather put off by this. However, by the next day didn't worry to much about it as other staff we had met made more of an impact over all.
Take the second level - the rooms are nicer. Only wished I'd know before the last day!
Food was super!"
Mrs. Anne C. - Australia on 15/06/2006
